BLACKFEET ECO KNOWLEDGE

Siksikaitsitapiiyssini (Blackfoot way of Life)
Connecting people back to the culture through elder knowledge.
The Blackfoot Way of Life Project is a cultural revitalization effort centered on reconnecting Blackfeet community members to traditional knowledge, practices, and the land. This project is developing a curriculum made up of learning modules that reflect Blackfoot bio-cultural diversity and are rooted in the stories, teachings, and values of our people.
Each module includes clear learning goals, hands-on activities, and meaningful incentives for participation. The curriculum is designed to be shared with tribal programs, schools, and outside organizations looking to support cultural connection and healing. Whether someone is beginning their cultural journey or returning to it, this project provides guided, accessible entry points into the Blackfoot way of life.
This work is especially valuable for programs serving community members who are navigating trauma or seeking healthier paths. By grounding people in culture and tradition, these modules offer a supportive space for growth and healing.
Modules so far have included:
The Scarface story, guiding participants through receiving a name, being given a holy blanket, and making their own moccasins.
The Featherwoman story, a teaching on grief and resilience through traditional narrative.
Lessons on birth and parenting, bringing cultural practices into family life.
Creative, hands-on projects like parfleche bags and ribbon skirts, connecting participants to tradition through art and making.
Together, these modules are helping restore what was interrupted—offering community members a way to reclaim cultural identity, language, and practices. The Blackfoot Way of Life Project is about more than learning—it’s about living as Nitsitapii.
