Awo'ta'kaakiks - Shield Keeper's Project

Shield Keepers are Indigenous land and water protectors who blend traditional knowledge with western science. They do hands-on stewardship work and help shape policies by bringing community voices, culture, and values to the table.

Shield Keepers are part of a growing movement of tribally led stewardship programs that center Indigenous knowledge, language, and values in caring for the land. These programs, often called Guardians programs, support Tribal Nations in reasserting their inherent rights and responsibilities to protect traditional territories. Shield Keepers not only do the boots-on-the-ground work—monitoring, restoring, and protecting land and water—but they also play a critical role in shaping policy and representing their Nations in government-to-government conversations.

Our Shield Keepers, Darrell Hall and Emmette Dustybull, are dedicated protectors of the Blackfeet homeland. They carry forward cultural teachings, listen to Elders, and bring that wisdom into their stewardship efforts. Whether it’s buffalo restoration, cultural site protection, language revitalization, or shaping environmental policy, Darrell and Emmette ensure that Blackfeet voices and values are always part of the conversation. Their work helps reconnect our community with the land and strengthens our ability to care for it for generations to come.
